Miyagawacho in Passing is a close street study of one of Kyoto’s five hanamachi, made primarily along the district’s narrow central street and surrounding lanes. The photographs follow maiko and geiko moving between engagements within the same field as residents, cyclists, taxis, delivery workers and visitors.

Rather than extracting ceremonial dress from the street around it, the series keeps each figure inside the district’s ordinary circulation. Formal appearance meets infrastructure, commerce, weather and interruption. The neighborhood’s public image is repeatedly made and unmade through these brief crossings.

The project considers how a place known through ritual and representation becomes visible as a working street. Tradition appears as lived labor rather than static inheritance. At ground level, Miyagawacho is both stage and route, spectacle and workplace, and never fully available to the passing camera.
