Believe Me examines certainty as a public performance. Private conviction becomes social when it claims another person’s attention, and the figure making that claim occupies an unstable role: prophet, pitchman, moral authority, confidence artist. The project approaches this figure as a recurring persona whose power rests less in proving a truth than in making belief feel urgent.
Faith and fraud converge in the techniques of persuasion without becoming the same thing. Promise, warning, ritual, generosity and rehearsed intimacy can express sincere care or disguise an extraction; often the distinction cannot be settled from appearances alone. Believe Me remains inside that contaminated boundary, where conviction becomes commerce, salvation acquires a price and exploitation operates through the language of concern.
Photography makes its own appeal to belief. The frame produces evidence, assigns emphasis and turns an encounter into an account while withholding everything that exceeds its edges. By placing religious certainty, performed authority and photographic truth under the same pressure, the work makes trust the contested relation among subject, photographer and viewer. What remains is not a verdict on belief, but an unease about how readily certainty becomes a claim over someone else.
