J’Ouvert: Caribbean Identity and Culture in Brooklyn

Chronicling Brooklyn’s J’Ouvert festival as a site where cultural identity materializes through collective ritual.

J’Ouvert follows the pre-dawn festival in Crown Heights across several years. Bodies, streets and clothing are transformed by paint, powder, music and movement as the neighborhood becomes a temporary ceremonial space.

The photographs approach the festival as a living practice rather than a fixed inheritance. Participants carry Caribbean histories into contemporary Brooklyn, adapting tradition through performance, family, style and collective presence. Cultural continuity appears as something made in public, not simply preserved from the past.

The series stays close to the tension between celebration, resistance and spectacle. It asks how a diasporic community claims space, how ritual changes as it travels, and how photography can record that force without reducing the gathering to color and exuberance alone.
