Melbourne, Again

An ongoing street study of Melbourne, photographed during yearly returns to home after moving to New York City.

Melbourne.

Photographing Melbourne is how I find my bearings when I return to the city where I grew up. Since moving to New York, I have usually gone back once a year, walking through places I remember and paying attention to what I no longer know. The camera gives me a reason to look again.

Melbourne.

I walk without much of a plan and photograph whatever holds my attention. Most encounters are brief, but over time they have built a record of the city as I keep finding it. Some things feel immediately familiar. Others remind me that Melbourne has continued without me.

Melbourne.

Living elsewhere has changed the terms of the relationship. I still know Melbourne by habit, but each visit now contains gaps and surprises that were harder to see when I lived there. Melbourne, Again stays with that unfinished return. It is an ongoing street study of a city I know well, seen from the distance that now comes with coming home.
