The Notebook

2024
Melbourne

A notebook begins in the present but immediately becomes a record of what is passing. It gathers unfinished thoughts, missing years, private arguments and words addressed to people who may never read them.

These photographs observe people writing in public while remaining absorbed in an interior space. Faces recede and language approaches visibility without becoming fully available. The pages show thought being formed rather than simply preserved: sentences repeat, change direction, are crossed out or left unresolved.

The notebook becomes a place where memory encounters its gaps and where absent people and structures can be addressed. It holds what cannot be recovered, what cannot be said aloud, and what has not yet found its final form.
